Jean Gebser used the word diaphany—transparency—to describe a way of perceiving in which what we ordinarily see doesn't disappear, but becomes transparent to something more. Jeremy Johnson describes something similar when he writes that distinctions and distances remain, but acquire a new vividness and radiance—as though difference itself becomes a song or prayer.
